MIDLAND, TEXAS – Midland College (MC) is helping to meet employer demands for a skilled workforce by offering a “Bridge Academy” focusing on marketable skills training. The class begins August 28 runs through October 19. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Midland College Advanced Technology Center (ATC) located at 3200 W. Cuthbert (corner of Midkiff and Cuthbert, next to Furr’s Cafeteria).
“The class is specifically designed for adults who have been out of school for a while or who do not have adequate computer, customer service or reading/communication skills to advance in the workplace,” explained Lynda Webb, dean of Adult and Developmental Education. “During the Bridge Academy program, we will not only train students in basic workplace skills, but also provide reading comprehension, vocabulary-building and applied math experiences. The curriculum is designed to teach participants customer service and computer skills so that they can obtain jobs with opportunity for growth. The academy will provide students the opportunity to earn a local Marketable Skills Certificate with continuing education credits that certify proficiency in basic computer skills, teamwork, problem solving and occupational math.”
Webb said that guest lecturers will include local human resources executives who will assist students with resume preparation and job interviewing skills, as well as discuss good work ethic and traits needed for promotion and career success. In addition, class participants will have the opportunity to explore various higher education opportunities that will lead to expanded career potential.
Thanks to special funding provided by the Texas Workforce Commission, the registration fee is only $30. Participants must complete an application; seating is limited. For more information, contact the Midland College Workforce Continuing Education department at (432) 681-6335 or stop by the Midland College ATC (3200 W. Cuthbert) to obtain an application.
