A new academic year at Midland College (MC) brings a new series of art exhibits to the college?s McCormick Gallery, which is located in the Allison Fine Arts Building on the main MC campus. The first exhibit of the 2017-2018 year features the works of five artists, all of whom are either current or former MC art students. The exhibit is the latest installment of the Studio 3600 Series, established in 2016 by retired MC Art Professor Warren Taylor.
MC is hosting a reception on Thursday evening, August 31, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The community is invited to view the exhibit and visit with the featured artists?Anabella Charlton, Mark Gaines, Jim Geitgey, Karen Lanier and Rick Reese. The exhibit includes ceramics, photography, painting, printmaking and mixed-media.
Those who cannot attend Thursday evening?s reception may view the exhibit during gallery hours through September 29. McCormick Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no admission fee. About the Artists
Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Anabella Charlton has a five-year degree specializing in Education and Psychology. She is currently the Lower School Art teacher for Trinity School of Midland. Charlton first began studying ceramics in 2017 and claimed that she ?fell in love? with the medium.
Mark Gaines is best known for his contemporary ceramic sculptures and acrylic paintings. He is a Midland native and has taken ceramic courses from three different MC professors.
Jim Geitgey, a local geologist, studied photography with Professor B. Kent Moss from 1995-2002. He has continued to pursue photography with the hope that the images he creates are respectful of the integrity of the original subject matter, while also creating something new and different.
Karen Lanier worked at MC as Communications Lab instructor from 1994 to 2013. Since her retirement, she has been taking classes in drawing and printmaking.
Rick Reese retired from medicine in late 2011 and was reborn into the world of art in 2012. He took a variety of classes at MC through 2016. Reese said that he ?loves the fearless daring and forgiveness of failure in painting that is so foreign to the field of medicine.?
