The Midland Chamber of Commerce recognizes the value of an educated workforce. The Chamber’s State of Education luncheon is designed to facilitate meaningful discourse on the topic and inform the business community about pressing issues faced by today’s educators.
This year's luncheon features: Mayor Mike Cornett of Oklahoma City and the discussion will be moderated by Dr. Steve Thomas, President of Midland College and Chairman of the Midland Chamber's Board of Directors.
The United States Conference of Mayors will honor Cornett as the 2013 recipient of the Joseph P. Riley Jr. Award for Leadership in Urban Design.
In 1993, Oklahoma City inaugurated the Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) model as an alternative means of funding public projects. In 2001, Oklahoma City launched the second MAPS initiative, MAPS for Kids, coupling $514 million in temporary sales tax revenue with a $180 million Oklahoma City Public School bond issue. These funds allowed the district to build new or renovate 70 urban schools and were secured thanks to an unprecedented coalition of the City, the public schools, and the business community.
Since taking office in 2004, Mayor Cornett has brought leadership to the completion of existing MAPS initiatives and has helped position Oklahoma City to continue its rapid revitalization through MAPS 3. Under Mayor Cornett’s leadership, Oklahoma City’s latest MAPS initiative consists of eight projects including: a new downtown convention center and 70 acre public park, a rail-based streetcar system, miles of new sidewalks and walking, running and cycling trails, and senior health and wellness centers.
