FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Midland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Support MISD Bond

On Wednesday, September 19th, the Midland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to approve a resolution supporting the MISD Bond that will appear on the November 6, 2012, ballot. Citing the fundamental link between a superior education system and a well-qualified workforce, the Chamber Board stands behind the district’s four-pronged plan to increase elementary capacity, re-align the district grade level-to-campus placement to more closely match the State curriculum and to proactively seek legislative solutions to current educational challenges.

Chamber President & CEO Bobby Burns stated, “The Chamber is firmly in support of Midland having the best possible school system. It is vital to a healthy, growing business climate.” In addition to the physical changes the bond will fund, Burns indicated that the Board’s decision was highly influenced by MISD’s commitment to developing solutions far beyond buildings.

Chris Robin, Chairman of the Board, explained how MISD’s comprehensive approach factored into the Board’s decision: “MISD has recently designated four areas of emphasis. The first three areas are teacher and staff excellence, academic programs of excellence and fundamental legislative change. These are the responsibility of the MISD Board and Administrators. The fourth is a long-term facilities plan. This is the responsibility of the community. Simply put, we have a math problem with the lack of availability of seats to properly meet our current elementary student needs. It’s time we begin to take action to correct this.” Chamber Board Chair-elect, Dr. Steve Thomas added, “MISD has declared its intent to search for real answers to the real legislative challenges facing education today. That determination has motivated our Board to support this initiative.”
