Children's Grief Awareness Day

Children’s Grief Awareness Day is a day focused on recognizing and supporting the children all around us who have experienced the death of a loved one. This day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the painful impact that the death of a loved one has in the life of a child. In our community we recognize that children of all ages grieve and through Rays of Hope, an outreach of HospiceMidland, we are going to support them through the grief process. Children’s Grief Awareness Day is observed the Thursday before Thanksgiving every year. In 2012, this day will be on November 15th.

Rays of Hope Children’s Grief Centre is a community outreach of Hospice Midland. We serve children 4 years to 18 years who have experienced a loss due to death, divorce, or other painful transition. At Rays of Hope we recognize that children need to do the work of grief, and the focus is primarily on peer support groups. Rays of Hope provides a safe, neutral environment where grieving children have permission to express what they feel and learn that they are not alone in dealing with the tough circumstances life sometimes brings.

Some ways that you can participate in this special day include wearing blue and letting others know what it represents. At Rays of Hope, we will be hosting an Art Exhibit: Grief through the Eyes of a Child. We encourage you to attend the art exhibit and learn more about supporting children who have experienced loss and change.

You can also show your support for grieving children by ordering a pair of personalized TOMS shoes painted by a local artist. We are taking orders now through October18th. We will also have blue wrist bands available at Rays of Hope for $1.00. Proceeds will benefit Rays of Hope Children’s Grief Centre.

Rays of Hope asks that you help us in spreading the word of National Blue Day! Stay tuned for more information about this great day by following us on Facebook, or even visiting our website
