Midlanders asked to participate in the Annual Great American Cleanup/Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off WEEK!!

Midland —Midlanders will get together the entire week of April 1st through the 6th on Saturday, April 6, 2013, for one of the nation’s largest cleanups – The Great American Cleanup/Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off – co-sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB), the grassroots arm of the Don’t Mess with Texas campaign and Keep Midland Beautiful.   Participating groups will clean up their designated area anytime during the week of April 1st through 6th and are asked to attend a celebration picnic at Hogan Park from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6th. Groups  not able to participate by April 6th are encouraged to do a litter cleanup before May 31st and still be counted as being part of the Cleanup/Trash-off.  Keep Midland Beautiful has extended the event to a week in hopes of getting more groups to participate.  "Not everyone is able to help on April 6th, so we decided to celebrate cleaning Midland for one whole week this year.  That was families, businesses, all groups can cleanup an area when it is convenient for them" says Doreen Womack, Executive Director of KMB.

The event is open to anyone interested in making Midlands’ public spaces litter-free.  Adopt-a-Highway groups are in charge of highway cleanup, while Keep Midland Beautiful volunteers focus on neighborhoods, city streets, parks, and vacant lots.  “The annual Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off brings people across the city together to clean up our roadsides and take pride in Midland,” says Celia Page, Chairman of the Great American Cleanup/Don't Mess with Texas Trash-off.

This year’s event is sponsored by H.E.B., Cimarex, Don Nan Pump and Supply, Chevron, City of Midland, Secured Document Shredding, Taco Villa, Aprotex, Kent Companies, Butts Recycling, Community National Bank, Midland Memorial Hospital, Suddenlink, Republic Services, Members Financial Credit Union and Standard Sales.
