Dr. Margaret Wade, Midland College dean of Math, Science & Kinesiology is once again coordinating one of her popular international travel/study experiences. On March 4-10, 2017, Dr. Wade and Dr. Ed Barnhart with the Mayan Exploration Center will lead a tour focusing on the biology and archaeology of Costa Rica.
Flying in and out of San Jose, participants will explore the eastern part of the country and the Pacific Coast visiting volcanoes, archaeological sites and nature preserves.
While on the Pacific Coast, the group will be able to see the whale migrations that occur in March. Moving on to Golfito, Wade and Barnhart will lead an exploration of the Piedras Blancas National Park on a wildlife trek. A flight from Golfito back to San Jose will return the group to the Alajuela area and its colorful local craft villages.
“We will travel from the heights of the Irazu Volcano to Uvita where the jungle meets the sea,” explained Dr. Wade. “Included will be whale watching, culture and the mysterious stone balls found in Guayabo National Monument. Dr. Barnhart will be our main leader and the archaeology expert. Throughout the week, Dr. Barnhart and I will conduct evening lectures to further explain the archaeology, ecology and geography of Costa Rica.
Cost of the trip is $2,250, which includes all lodging, private transportation, domestic flight from Golfito to San Jose, breakfasts and lunches, archaeologist and naturalist guides, evening lectures and entry fees. Roundtrip airfare is approximately $700. The trip is limited to 20 participants; registration deadline is November 15.
