Name: Veterans Benefits & Resources Fair
Date: October 15, 2016
Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM CDT
Event Description:
On Saturday, October 15, Midland College (MC) will host a Veterans Benefits & Resources Fair from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Scharbauer Student Center on the main MC campus, 3600 N. Garfield in Midland. Veterans and their families are invited to stop by during the day for information about services in the Midland community. Representatives from various organizations, including the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) will be present.
MC Vice President of Information Technology & Facilities Dennis Sever serves as an advisor to the MC veterans student organization and explained, “Midland College currently has 294 students who are military veterans. Staff in our Veterans Assistance Office connect our students to organizations for assistance; however, we realize that there are many military veterans in our community who do not know where they can go for assistance. We also want to be able to share information with veterans about special educational opportunities and tuition assistance.”
Angel Lopez, a U.S. Navy veteran, attended Midland College from August 2014 to May 2016. He moved to Midland with his family from Turpin, Oklahoma, because of the excellent reputation of MC’s Aviation Maintenance program and the job opportunities available to him in the Permian Basin.
“Thankfully, I was able to take advantage of the college veterans’ assistance program, which provides tuition, book stipends and a monthly housing allowance,” said Lopez. “The Midland College Veterans Assistance Office assisted me with all the paperwork. The process couldn’t have gone smoother.”
MC Veterans Assistance Coordinator Kay Schipper said that all military veterans and their families are welcome to attend on Saturday any time between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
“The Permian Basin has a large population of veterans because of the availability of jobs,” stated Schipper. “We can’t say ‘thank you’ enough for the service that our veterans have given to our country. Now it’s our turn to serve them.”
