The highly esteemed, New York based Cassatt String Quartet will begin its inaugural Cassatt in the Basin! residency in Midland, Texas from September 19-24, 2016.  This residency aims to give Midland students the opportunity to study with artist teachers, develop both chamber music and orchestra skills, and also develop chamber music audiences of the future.  A full residency schedule is posted at www.CassattInTheBasin.net.  Videos of Cassatt in the Basin! may be viewed there, as well as on YouTube.
The Cassatt in the Basin! September 19-24th residency will specifically focus on daily chamber music coachings for students of Midland High School and Lee High School, as well as lecture demonstrations for music classes at Midland College that discuss the versatility of string instruments, demonstrations of various string articulations, such as pizzicato or glissando etc., and insights into why a composer picks a Major or minor key, with appropriate  examples.
On Thurs., Sept. 22, 2016 at 4PM, there will be an outreach event by the Cassatt String Quartet at Polo Park Estates, 2100 Castleford Road, Midland, TX.  The concert program features Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet Op. 13, in a minor and Peter Illych Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet Op 11 in D major.
On Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 12 Noon, in the Bowie Fine Arts Academy Performing Arts Center, 805 Elk, Midland, TX, there will be an exciting, triple string quartet performance by students and the Cassatt String Quartet of Peter Lieuwen's GreenSpace, commissioned by Cassatt In the Basin!  Peter Lieuwen is on the faculty at Texas A & M University. This event is free and open to the public, and a reception follows in the foyer.
On Saturday evening, September 24, 2016 at 7:30PM, a recital by the Cassatt String Quartet will be held in the Wagner/Brown Auditorium, located in the Allison Fine Arts Building on the Midland College campus. The Cassatts will perform a beautiful and romantic program that includes: Felix Mendelssohn’s  Quartet Op. 13 in a minor Quartet; Ellen Taffe Zwillich’s Voyage; and Peter Illych Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet Op 11 in D major. This concert is also free and open to the public.
The Midland, Cassatt in the Basin! residency has received generous support from The Rea Charitable Trust, The Permian Basin Youth Chavarim, The Permian Basin Area Foundation and The Arts Council of Midland. 
Jennifer Leshnower, the Cassatt String Quatet’s second violinist, is a graduate of Permian High School and a former member of the Thouvenel String Quartet, formerly in residence with the Midland-Odessa Symphony and Chorale. Jennifer was the principal 2nd violinist with the MOSC from 1991-1994.   Ms. Leshnower is also a former student of Dorothy Croft, long time leader in music education and other cultural activities in Odessa.  Additionally, Jennifer is a graduate of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and Peabody Conservatory.
Corey Metcalf is the Cassatt in the Basin! residency coordinator, and is the assistant orchestra teacher at Lee High School in Midland.  Mr. Metcalf is also an alumni of Cassatt in the Basin!
The Cassatt String Quartet was the first quartet chosen for Juilliard’s Young Artists Quartet Program. Since then, they have performed at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood Music Theater, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Theatre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Beijing Central Conservatory in China. At the Library of Congress, the Cassatt performed on the library’s matched quartet of Stradivarius instruments, and they performed the three complete Beethoven Quartet cycles at the University at Buffalo.
The Cassatt has been heard on NPR’s Performance Today, Boston’s WGBH, and New York’s WQXR and WNYC. They have 30 recordings, and were named three times to Alex Ross’ 10 best classical recordings of the year in The New Yorker magazine. The quartet is named for the celebrated American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt.


Cassatt members include: Muneko Otani and Jennifer Leshnower, violins; Ah Ling Neu, viola; and Elizabeth Anderson, cello.
